Since returning from a nine-month layoff in late June, owner and trainer Hugh Robertson's Hotshot Anna has continued her consistent ways and Aug. 19 landed a repeat victory of the $100,000 Satin and Lace Stakes at Presque Isle Downs.
The 5-year-old Trappe Shot mare has finished first or second in her last nine starts, and she remains undefeated in three starts at Presque Isle.
Monday's victory proved her grit. Hotshot Anna ended her 2018 season with a 4 1/4-length victory in the Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (G2) last September, but got a late start to 2019 after flipping while stabled at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots and breaking her withers. She returned June 29 at Arlington International Race Course to finish second in the Chicago Handicap (G3)—a race she won a year ago and set the track record—and then sprinted to a turf victory in an allowance optional claiming race at the Chicago-area track Aug. 3.
Sent off as the 3-5 Satin and Lace favorite under Antonio Gallardo Monday evening, Hotshot Anna stalked the pace while Shanghai Tariff and Bring It On Home dueled up front. Shanghai Tariff led through opening fractions of :22.30 and :45.21, but could not hold off Hotshot Anna. The defending winner took command in the stretch and rolled home to complete six furlongs in 1:09.14 on a fast track.
Spring in the Wind rallied from seventh to finish second 1 1/4 lengths behind the winner. Shanghai Tariff held for third, with Crazy Sweet, Honey Bunny, Reality Queen, and Bring It On Home completing the order of finish.
With her second Satin and Lace victory, Hotshot Anna improved her bankroll to $623,440 with a 9-6-1 record from 21 starts. Robertson purchased her for a mere $20,000 from breeder Paul Tackett's consignment to 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
Hotshot Anna was bred in Kentucky out of the stakes-placed Holy Bull mare Avalos, who's produced seven winners from eight starters. Avalos foaled a Speightster colt May 13 and was bred to Exaggerator for 2020.
