New York-breds are set to take over Saratoga Race Course Aug. 23, with six stakes worth $1.15 million highlighting New York Breeders' Showcase Day.
Ten 3-year-olds are entered for the featured race, the $250,000 Albany Stakes. Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing's Bankit enters Friday's 1 1/8-mile event off his July 24 New York Derby victory at Finger Lakes. It was the second stakes win for the Central Banker colt, who also took the Sleepy Hollow Stakes last fall at Belmont Park.
New York Derby runner-up Not That Brady also is entered in the Albany. The Big Brown gelding, owned by Michael Imperio, Lianna Stables, R. A. Hill Stables, and Rudy Rodriguez, was a head shy of winning the Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack when on the Triple Crown trail early this year. Not That Brady's most recent victory came in the Dec. 31 Damon Runyon Stakes at Aqueduct.
Jerold Zaro's Blindwillie McTell is a three-time stakes winner against New York-bred company, and last finished fourth when stretched out around two turns in the New York Derby. Gatsas Stables, R. A. Hill Stable, and Swick Stable's Funny Guy opened his season with a victory in the New York Stallion Stakes series and has finished second in three consecutive black-type events since. Friday will be his first time past a mile.
Six sophomore fillies will run the same distance in the $200,000 Fleet Indian Stakes, with Richie Rich Racing Stable and Jackie Stauffer's Wait a Minute looking to make it three in a row. The Discreetly Mine filly led every step of the New York Oaks last out, and ran away with a Finger Lakes allowance by 23 1/4 lengths July 8.
Bad Boy Racing's Kid Is Frosty brings a consistent record with her, having never finished off the board in nine starts. The daughter of Frost Giant switches back to the main track after two turf wins in New York Stallion Series stakes. Beach Haven Thoroughbreds' Newly Minted, undefeated in her fist three of four starts, will make her two-turn debut.
Two-year-olds will sprint 6 1/2 furlongs in the $200,000 Funny Cide Stakes and $200,000 Seeking the Ante Stakes, the latter for fillies.
E.V. Racing Stable's Sky of Hook leads the six Funny Cide entries off a nose victory in the July 17 Rick Violette Stakes at Saratoga. The Tapiture colt got up in the shadow of the wire to remain undefeated in two starts. That effort followed a head victory May 10 at Belmont after veering out in the stretch and then rushing from fourth.
Gold Square's My Italian Rabbi tops six fillies in the Seeking the Ante after winning Saratoga's Stillwater Stakes by a nose July 18. The daughter of Competitive Edge pressed Nice Guy Stables and Steve Hornstock's Fierce Lady before nipping the frontrunner at the wire. Fierce Lady will also be back in Friday's race.
Saratoga also has two turf stakes carded for Friday: the $150,000 West Point Stakes Presented by Trustco Bank and $150,000 Yaddo Stakes. Both races will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf for 3-year-olds and up, with the Yaddo for fillies and mares.
Oak Bluff Stables' Therapist, a six-time stakes winner in 13 starts, opened his season April 27 when he rallied to a neck victory on yielding Belmont turf in the Elusive Quality Stakes. The 4-year-old Freud gelding came back to run fourth in the Kingston Stakes May 27 when six wide and third in a 1 1/16-mile allowance optional claimer July 3 after stalking the pace.
Barry Schwartz' Voodoo Song, who won the 2018 Fourstardave Handicap (G1T) a year ago, is looking for his first on-the-board finish in four starts since that top effort. The 5-year-old son of English Channel faded from first to seventh last out in the Aug. 3 Fasig-Tipton Lure Stakes at the Spa.
Peter Brant's Fifty Five looks tough to beat in the Yaddo. Since finishing third in last year's edition, the 5-year-old Get Stormy mare has won four straight stakes against other New York-breds. Brown last sent Fifty Five out in the July 2 Dr. James Penny Memorial (G3) at Parx Racing, where she missed by half a length. The grade 3 winner has only been out of the money once in 19 starts.
