Riversedge Racing Stables' Bare Back Jack became the first black-type winner for Bakken when he claimed the Aug. 25 Birdcatcher Stakes by a head at Century Mile.
The 2-year-old Alberta-bred gelding broke well under jockey Rigo Sarmiento and stalked early leader Shanghai Mike in the two path. He was shifted off the rail sharply in midstretch, set down for a duel, and prevailed at the wire. The final time for the 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:17.90.
Sunday's victory came just 20 days after Bare Back Jack broke his maiden at Century Mile by a neck going 5 1/2 furlongs on the dirt. The Tim Rycroft trainee was also the first winner for his sire.
Bred by Moonshine Meadow Ranch, Bare Back Jack is out of the Captain Bodgit mare Thesefoolishthings, who has produced three winners from as many foals to race. He was purchased for $13,874 by Norm Castiglione from the Moonshine Meadow consignment to the 2018 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society (Alberta Division) Fall Mixed Sale.
Bred in Kentucky by Hermitage Farm and WinStar Farm, Bakken is a graded stakes-placed son of Distorted Humor whose best effort came at 4 when he finished second to Palace in the True North Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park. He won three of his 10 starts and earned $223,900.
Bakken has stood at Stoneridge Farm in British Columbia for $1,500 since retiring in 2016.
