After being placed first in the Canadian Derby (G3) Aug. 18 at Century Mile Racetrack and Casino, Explode will try to secure a second straight Derby win in Western Canada Sept. 7 in the CA$250,000 (US$188,375) British Columbia Derby (G3) at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver.
Making his graded stakes debut in the Canadian Derby, Canmor Farms' Explode dueled with Journeyman through the stretch of that 1 1/4-mile race before finishing a neck behind. But following a stewards' inquiry and a jockey's objection from Amadeo Perez aboard Explode, the stewards determined Journeyman, who drifted out entering the stretch and in midstretch, interfered with Explode. Journeyman was disqualified to second and Explode was placed first.
The Canadian Derby marked the third black-type win for the consistent Explode, who won the listed Ascot Graduation Stakes last year at Hastings and this year set a track record at Century Mile for 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.02. Trained by Mark Cloutier, the son of Trappe Shot has a 6-3-1 record from 10 starts.
Regular rider Perez will be on board Saturday when Explode, the 2-1 morning-line favorite, starts from post 2 in the 1 1/8-mile race that has attracted nine 3-year-olds.
While Journeyman's connections opted for the Sept. 8 Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Derby at Kentucky Downs, the third-place finisher from the Canadian Derby will make the trip: Peter and James Redekop's Final Jeopardy. The Redekops privately purchased Final Jeopardy from Gary and Mary West after the son of Street Sense finished second in the Dwyer Stakes (G3) to eventual Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) winner Code of Honor.
In his first start for trainer Philip Hall, Final Jeopardy rallied from 10th to finish third in the Canadian Derby, where he was the 6-5 favorite. Final Jeopardy is listed at 3-1 on the morning line.
The second choice at 5-2 is North American Thoroughbred Horse Company's Five Star General, who delivered a front-end score in the black-type British Columbia Cup Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial Handicap Aug. 5 at Hastings. The son of Distorted Humor was guided in that victory by Mario Gutierrez, and the two-time Kentucky Derby (G1)-winning rider will be back aboard.
Also Saturday, nine 3-year-old fillies have been entered in the CA$100,000 ($75,350) British Columbia Oaks, where Sargent Stables' Killarney Lass will look for a third straight win after rolling to a 9 1/4-length victory in the Washington Oaks Aug. 11 at Emerald Downs.
Killarney Lass is the 3-1 morning-line choice in the 1 1/8-mile test.
