The long green rolls on at Kentucky Downs Sept. 8 with a pair of turf stakes for 3-year-olds offering more than ample compensation for the journey to Franklin, Ky. Both races are to be run at 1 5/16 miles around the European-style course with 10 males entered in the $600,000 Exacta Systems Dueling Grounds Derby and fillies running for $350,000 in Fifth Third Insurance Dueling Grounds Oaks.

The race names reference the original name of the track that opened in 1990. The name was changed to Kentucky Downs in 1997.

The class of the Derby cast appears to be on the rail in The Elkstone Group's Social Paranoia. The Street Boss  colt has run in four graded stakes and last time out was a good fourth to A Thread of Blue in the $1 million Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes at 1 3/16 miles.

Third in the Pilgrim Stakes (G3T) to close out his juvenile campaign, the Todd Pletcher-trained Social Paranoia was third in a blanket finish this spring in Churchill Downs' American Turf Stakes presented by Ram Trucks (G2T) and third in Belmont Park's Pennine Ridge Stakes (G3T). His strongest effort came July 6 when second to Henley's Joy in the 10-furlong Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T).

Bred in Kentucky by Mineola Farm and Silent Grove Farm, Social Paranoia was a $75,000 purchase during Fasig-Tipton's The July Sale in 2017. He has earned $426,700 while going 1-4-4 in 10 starts. His on-the-pace style should have him in the right spot throughout.

Next to him in the starting gate will be Bruce Lunsford and Lansdon Robbins' Armistice Day, winner of Woodbine's Toronto Cup in his previous start. By Declaration of War, the chestnut gelding took the nine-furlong event for his first score in only two turf attempts. Barbara Minshall has taken over the training since a fourth-place finish in Churchill's Matt Winn Stakes (G3) in mid-June.

Other players include Godolphin's Journeyman and Winchell Thoroughbreds and Willis Horton Racing's Limonite. The former journeyed from his base at Arlington International Racecourse to Edmonton, Alberta for the Aug. 18 Canadian Derby (G3). The son of Animal Kingdom  finished first in the 1 1/4-mile dirt race but was disqualified and placed second.

Limonite enters off a seventh-place finish, beaten three lengths, in the Aug. 2 National Museum and Hall of Fame Stakes (G2T) at Saratoga Race Course in his turf debut. The bay colt is a half brother to Brazlian group 1 winner Greenzapper.

Similar class players appear in the Oaks in the form of GU Racing Stable's Belle Laura and Three Chimneys Farm's Princesa Carolina.

Belle Laura, a Mucho Macho Man  filly, was third behind Concrete Rose last fall in Keeneland's JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) and this season has tested the stakes winners three times with a placing in Gulfstream Park's Herecomesthebride Stakes (G3T) to her credit. Norm Casse trains.

Princess Carolina, a hombred by Tapit  out of grade 1 winner Pure Clan, topped Belle Laura when second in the Herecomesthebride and has since placed in Keeneland's Appalachian Stakes presented by Japan Racing Association (G3T) and Arlington's Pucker Up Stakes (G3T) for trainer Kenny McPeek.

They figure to square off against Calumet Farm's Red Rounder, second in Gulfstream's one-mile Martha Washington Stakes last time out, and a pair of G. Watts Humphrey Jr. runners in grade 2-placed High Regard and Wildlife. Both are trained by Humphrey's daughter, Victoria Oliver.
