The Minnesota Thoroughbred Association will host its annual MTA Yearling Sale Sunday, Sept. 8 beginning at 5 p.m. (all times CDT) at Canterbury Park's Expo Center in Shakopee, Minn.
The sale consists of 49 foals of 2018 that were bred in Minnesota and one Kentucky-bred yearling by Summer Front .
"It is always exciting to attend this sale and see the future of racing in Minnesota. The pedigrees are strong with interesting bloodlines," said Kay King, executive director of the MTA. "There is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into getting Minnesota foals ready from the time they are born, to the time they are yearlings."
The 50 horses will be stalled in the receiving barn at Canterbury Park, beginning Saturday, Sept. 7. The previews will be held in the Receiving Barn from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Several recent MTA Sale graduates have notable racing careers. Stakes winner Firstmate, by Midshipman , was purchased at the 2016 sale and has earned $183,723. Another stakes winner, Ari Gia, by Giacomo, was purchased for $5,000 at the 2015 sale and has collected $241,877 in earnings.
A Paddock Sale, newly added this year, will take place Sept. 9 at 5 p.m. For a horse to be entered in this sale, it must have had a start or a timed work at Canterbury this summer. Phillip Pierceall of Swing City Auctions will be the sale's auctioneer this year. Canterbury Park's racing analyst Brian Arrigoni will be the pedigree reader.
