Bronn breaks his maiden at Los Alamitos Race Course

Making his third start, Jill Baffert's Bronn broke his maiden Sept. 8 at Los Alamitos Race Course and became the first winner for Buck Pond Farm's freshman sire Conveyance .

The Bob Baffert trainee had raced twice at Del Mar, finishing fourth in both efforts. At Los Al, Bronn left post 3 in the one-mile test and showed early speed under jockey J.C. Diaz Jr., taking over the lead after a quarter-mile in :23.64. The colt had a half-length lead as a half-mile went in :47.18, and he continued to duel with Special Day at the six-furlong mark, holding on by a head.

Pressed from that point on by Special Day, Bronn finished a half-length in front despite drifting out, bumping with his rival, and jumping the track marks. The final time over a fast track was 1:38.12.

Bred by Douglas Arnold and Rob Auerbach in Kentucky, Bronn is out of the Seattle Slew mare Sunrise Slew, who has produced 10 winners from 10 foals to race, including grade 3 winner Sunrise Smarty.

A two-time grade 3 winner, Conveyance started on the Kentucky Derby trail, winning the San Rafael Stakes (G3) and Southwest Stakes (G3) and then finishing runner up in the Sunland Derby (G3) at 3. He made the starting gate for the 2010 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) but finished off the board for Zabeel Racing International when trained by Baffert. As a 2-year-old he won both of his starts while under Baffert's care for Thoroughbred Legends Racing Stable.

In 2011 Conveyance was sent to Dubai where he raced only five times from age 4 to 8. He was last trained by Satish Seemar.

A son of Indian Charlie—Emptythetill, by Holy Bull, Conveyance was a $240,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase and won four of 11 starts, earning $496,560. He was bred by Gulf Coast Farms in Kentucky and stood for a fee of $5,000 in 2019.
