Buck Pond Farm graded stakes-winning sire Niagara Causeway was euthanized Sept. 3 due to complications from colic surgery, according to the farm. He was 16.
The son of Giant's Causeway was bred in Kentucky by Bronwyn Maddocks, Andrew Harcourt, and Skymarc Farm out of the Irish champion Theoretically (by Theatrical), who was acquired privately by Skymarc, Maddocks, Harcourt, and Chryss O'Reilly. Niagara Causeway was sold at the 2004 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Castlemartin Stud to La Bahia Stud for 130,000 guineas (US$242,479).
As a racehorse, Niagara Causeway showed versatility, winning the Tokyo City Handicap (G3) on Santa Anita Park's main track and finishing a close second in the Cinema Breeders' Cup Handicap (G3T) on the turf at Hollywood Park. In the Tokyo City, Niagara Causeway equaled the track record of 2:29 going 12 furlongs on the main track, at that time an all-weather surface. He retired with a 4-4-1 record out of 20 starts and earned $255,567.
As a stallion, Niagara Causeway sired 29 winners from 52 starters. His top runners were 2017 Tropical Park Derby winner Durocher, who earned more than $146,000 on the turf, and Hello People, who placed in the listed El Joven Stakes on the grass at Retama Park.
La Bahia Stud stood Niagara Causeway at Buck Pond Farm for $2,500 in 2019. His final crop of foals is due in 2020.
