Shadwell Stable's multiple graded stakes winner Qurbaan came out of his second consecutive win in the Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2T) with a slight injury that has forced his retirement to stud, the farm announced Sept. 10.
The 6-year-old son of Speightstown out of the French-bred Zieten mare Flip Flop will stand at Nashwan Stud on Shadwell Farm next year for a fee of $5,000 with a live foal guarantee.
"Qurbaan has a slight injury, but it will require some stall rest, forcing him to miss the main objectives this fall, so the decision was made to retire him," said Kent Barnes, Shadwell's stallion manager.
Bred in Kentucky by Justin Carthy, Qurbaan was purchased by Shadwell for $300,000 as a weanling at the 2013 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale out of Hunter Valley Farm's consignment. The colt is the third foal out of Flip Flop, who is a grade 1-placed stakes winner and has produced four winners out of as many foals to race. Flip Flop's dam, Flaponny, is a half sister to Japanese grade 1 winner and sire That's the Plenty and Japanese black-type winner Manic Sunday, who is also a graded stakes producer.
Qurbaan was undefeated in two starts at 2 and won his first stakes at 3 in the Prix Luthier at Deauville. In his first start in the United States in 2018, Qurbaan won the Bernard Baruch Handicap by a nose over grade 1-placed winner Forge. He would go on that season to finish third in the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) and was runner-up in the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2T). In 2019, Qurbaan started the season with a third—a half-length behind Inspector Lynley—in the Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T) and a third in the Maker's 46 Mile Stakes (G1T) before finishing as runner-up in the Old Forester Turf Classic Stakes (G1T), half a length behind Bricks and Mortar. He returned to his winning ways in the Sept. 2 Bernard Baruch, which he took by a commanding 2 1/2 lengths in a hand ride from jockey Joel Rosario.
Out of 22 starts, Qurbaan compiled a 7-3-6 record and won or placed in nine graded stakes. He earned $854,408 in purses.
"Qurbaan was a barn favorite and was unlucky in some of his close finishes," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. "He was consistent and versatile, winning on both firm and soft ground."
Shadwell also announced the retirement of grade 3 winner Shagaf to Indiana Stallion Station, where he will stand for $2,500, live foal.
Bred in Kentucky by Shadwell and trained by Chad Brown, Shagaf won his debut at 2 as well as his first two starts at 3. A victory in the Gotham Stakes (G3) earned the son of Bernardini a spot in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) starting gate, but injuries sustained during the Louisville classic prevented him returning to form.
Shagaf, out of Unbridled's Song stakes winner Muhaawara, retired with three wins from seven starts and $331,700 in earnings.
Both horses will be available for inspection at Nashwan Stud, 3661 Military Pike near Lexington, Ky., throughout the Keeneland September Sale between 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
