Mia Mischief wins the Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs

Mia Mischief, who became Into Mischief 's first grade 1-winning daughter with a win in this year's Humana Distaff Stakes (G1), will be offered by ELiTE Sales Nov. 4 at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected mixed sale in Lexington, Ky.

The 4-year-old filly is owned by Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Heider Family Stables, and Madaket Stables. The Heilgbrodts purchased Mia Mischief as a 2-year-old for $300,000 at The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected sale of 2-year-olds in training, out of the McKathan Bros. consignment. She was a pinhook for the McKathans, who acquired her at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $135,000 from Vinery Sales, which was acting as agent for the filly's breeder, Spendthrift Farm.

"Mia Mischief is a superstar by the hottest stallion in America," said ELiTE Sales' Bradley Weisbord. "She was a brilliant 2-year-old, 3-year-old, and 4-year-old, finishing first or second in 13 of 17 starts. She beat the best and she did it with blazing speed in a devastating style."

The crowning moment for Mia Mischief—trained her entire career by Steve Asmussen—came in the May 4 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs, where she defeated a deep field that included grade 1 winners Marley's Freedom and Spiced Perfection to win by 1 3/4 lengths, earning a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 97. In her next start, she defeated subsequent Longines Test Stakes (G1) winner Covfefe after laying down fractions of :21.38 and :44.41 for a half-mile in the Roxelana Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Mia Mischief broke her maiden in her second start by 16 1/4 lengths at Keeneland and ran a 3/4 on the Thoro-Graph sheets, the fastest 2-year-old number of the year for fillies, in October 2017. At 3, she took the Purple Martin Stakes at Oaklawn Park by 8 1/4 lengths before going gate-to-wire in the Eight Belles Stakes Presented by Kentucky Trailer (G2) at Churchill Downs. She finished second, beaten just a neck, in last year's Test Stakes at Saratoga Race Course after dueling through the stretch with multiple grade 1 winner Separationofpowers.

Mia Mischief is out of the Speightstown  mare Greer Lynn, who is in foal to War Front  for 2020.

"Speed is our thing, and Mia Mischief is one of the fastest we've ever owned," Bill Heiligbrodt said. "Not only is she fast, but Corinne and I also recognized her as a superior physical, offering size and scope, placing her at the top of our list of Into Mischief offspring. We've won two Tests, and Mia's nose defeat kept us from our third. Derby Day is special; the Humana Distaff is special. We've run numerous superstar fillies in the Humana Distaff and were not able to get it done before 'Mia.' It was a celebration we'll never forget."

Leading sire Into Mischief now has five grade 1 winners: Goldencents , Practical Joke , Audible, Mia Mischief, and Covfefe.
