When Canmor Farms' Explode takes on older horses for the first time in the Sept. 29 British Columbia Premier's Handicap (G3) at Hastings Racecourse, it will set up a showdown between two of the year's more consistent runners on the local circuit as 4-year-old He's the Reason awaits.

In six races against other 3-year-olds this season, Explode has earned four wins and two runner-up finishes, including a grade 3 victory in the Canadian Derby at Century Mile, where he was placed first after Journeyman was disqualified for interference. Trained by Mark Cloutier, the son of Trappe Shot  also has earned stakes wins this season in the Chris Loseth Handicap and River Rock Casino Handicap, both at Hastings.

Explode enters Sunday's 1 3/8-mile test off a runner-up finish to Five Star General, finishing a nose behind the winner in that 1 1/8-mile British Columbia Derby (G3) at Hastings.

As consistent as Explode has been this season in the 3-year-old ranks, North American Thoroughbred Horse Company's He's the Reason has nearly matched that in the handicap division.

A son of The Factor , He's the Reason is the 8-5 morning-line favorite after securing two stakes victories in his past three starts. He won the Lieutenant Governor's Handicap July 14, finished second in the Derby Bar and Grill British Columbia Cup Classic Handicap Aug. 5, and enters Sunday's race off a clear victory in the 1 1/8-mile S.W. Randall Plate Handicap Sept. 7.

All three of those races were contested at Hastings, where He's the Reason started the season with a runner-up finish and victory in two claiming races. Sunday will mark his first graded stakes debut.
