Maxis Stable, Madaket Stables, and Wonder Stables' Miss J McKay became the first foal by Murmur Farm's Hangover Kid to earn black type when she took the Anne Arundel County Stakes Sept. 28 at Laurel Park.
Trained by Cathal Lynch and ridden by Trevor McCarthy, Miss J McKay broke last in the nine-horse field. The bay filly cut a path to the front and accelerated between horses off the turn before being shifted out four wide at the top of the stretch. Urged onward by McCarthy, Miss J McKay drew away in deep stretch to win by five lengths. The final time for the 5 1/2 furlongs was 1:02.49 on turf rated firm.
Bred in Maryland by Linda Oliff Rohleder out of the Street Boss mare Ballykiss, Miss J McKay was sold as a weanling for $1,500 by Bill Reightler through the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed Sale to DR Investments. She was pinhooked through the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale for $55,000 to Maxis Stable out of the Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services consignment.
Costanzo Sales consigned the filly at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, but she was bought back on a final bid of $85,000. Miss J McKay was also the first winner from the first starter for Hangover Kid, whose first crop is comprised of only five named foals.
A grade 2-winning son of Lemon Drop Kid , Hangover Kid was bred in New York and campaigned by Steve Taglienti, who races under the banner of Four Tags Stable. Trained by Jason Servis, the colt won the 2014 Bowling Green Handicap (G2T) at Belmont Park and was third in the 2013 United Nations Stakes (G1T) at Monmouth Park. He retired with a 7-7-3 record out of 26 starts and earnings of $643,203. He entered stud at Murmur Farm in 2016 and stood for a fee of $2,500 for the 2019 breeding season.
