Global Access wins the Ontario Derby at Woodbine

Live Oak Plantation's Global Access built on his Aug. 31 win in Saratoga Race Course's Saranac Stakes (G3T) to score a 1 1/4-length victory Sept. 28 in the CA$125,500 (US$94,808) Ontario Derby (G3) at Woodbine. The sophomore son of the late Giant's Causeway covered the nine furlongs in 1:48.24 while defeating Armistice Day.

Favored Avie's Flatter was fifth of six.

Global Access, ridden by Patrick Husbands for trainer Michael Trombetta, paid $6.40 as the second choice. He tracked Avie's Flatter early, taking command in the lane after six furlongs in 1:12.07. He hit the eighth pole with a one-length lead in 1:35.90. Armistice Day finished a half-length ahead of Jungle Fighter.

Winner of Woodbine's Marine Stakes (G3) this season, Global Access is 5-1-4 (3-1-0 on Polytrack) from 12 starts and has earned $373,401. Out of grade 2 winner Daveron, Global Access is a half brother to grade 2 winner March to the Arch.

Earlier in the day, The Great Day upset 4-5 favorite Special Forces by a nose in a blanket finish of the CA$130,000 (US$98,209) Durham Cup Stakes (G3). Thor's Rocket was 3 1/4 lengths back in third in the five-horse field. The nine furlongs on the all-weather surface went in 1:49.68.

It was a gate-to-wire score for The Great Day. An :11.77 final eighth helped seal the deal.

The Great Day, also ridden by Husbands, shipped from Southern California for the Durham Cup by trainer Arnaud Delacour. The Lael Stables 5-year-old was coming off a fifth in the Del Mar Handicap (G2T). Prior to that effort, the son of Harlan's Holiday was second in the Arlington Handicap (G3T). In 15 starts, he has five wins, six seconds, and one third, with $338,574 in earnings.

Bred in Argentina by Firmamento, he's out of the Honour and Glory mare The Great Glory.
