Sanford Stakes (G3) victor By Your Side will take on electric maiden winner Gouverneur Morris when both colts try two turns for the first time in the $500,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1), a 1 1/16-mile event for 2-year-olds Oct. 5 at Keeneland.
The Breeders' Futurity is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race, awarding the winner a berth into the Nov. 1 TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
WinStar Farm stallion Constitution is the sire of By Your Side and Gouverneur Morris, and the former was the stallion's first black-type winner in the July 13 Sanford at Saratoga Race Course. A victory by either colt Saturday would give Constitution his first grade 1 winner in his first crop.
Anderson Stables' By Your Side won on debut in June at Churchill Downs before rolling to a three-length score in the six-furlong Sanford. The bay colt traveled an extra furlong in the Sept. 2 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes (G1) at the Spa, where he encountered a sloppy track and finished fifth.
Trainer Eddie Kenneally has sent out By Your Side for two bullet works on Keeneland's main track. He breezed five furlongs in :59 Sept. 27 and a half-mile in :47 3/5 Sept. 18.
Gouverneur Morris, trained by Todd Pletcher for Team Valor International and WinStar Farm, was sent 5 1/2 furlongs in the slop in a Sept. 2 maiden special weight, and the gray/roan colt came from third to win by nine lengths. He's turned in two speedy five-furlong breezes on the Belmont Park training track in preparation for Saturday, working in 1:00 4/5 Sept. 27, the second-fastest at the distance, and a bullet 1:00.88 Sept. 20.
Team Valor purchased Gouverneur Morris for $600,000 from Eddie Woods' consignment at The Gulfstream Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected 2-year-olds in training sale in Florida. Phoenix Thoroughbreds originally purchased him for $200,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He was consigned by Select Sales, agent for Kentucky breeders Machmer Hall, Carrie Brogden, Craig Brogden, and James Miller.
Constitution is No. 2 on the first-crop sires list by earnings, trailing only Triple Crown winner American Pharoah , whose son American Butterfly, fourth in the Hopeful, is also entered in the Breeders' Futurity.
D. Wayne Lukas trains American Butterfly for Les Wagner. The bay colt won second time out at Saratoga, taking over early in a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight and winning by 2 1/2 lengths at 22-1 odds.
Also entered is Enforceable, a full brother to multiple grade 2 winner and Shadwell Farm stallion Mohaymen . Mark Casse will saddle the son of Tapit out of the multiple grade 2 winner Justwhistledixie. The gray/roan colt, who carries John Oxley's silks, broke his maiden in his fourth start when stretched out to 1 1/8 miles Aug. 22 at Saratoga.
