It had been over three years since Adventist hit the board in a stakes race, but the Uriah St. Lewis trainee broke through Oct. 5 at Parx Racing when he rallied to a 50-1 upset in the $200,000 Greenwood Cup Stakes (G3).
As a sophomore, the son of Any Given Saturday placed in three graded stakes, including the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1). Now 6, the bay gelding worked his way through the claiming and starter allowance ranks before returning to stakes this year.
Jockey John Bisono was back aboard the Bleu Max Stable runner in Saturday's 1 1/2-mile feature. Odds-on favorite Marconi broke poorly before moving up to third on the outside of War Story in second. Asphalt Paving took command from the rail and set opening quarter-mile fractions of :24.75 and :50.07, with Adventist last of six at the half-mile point.
Asphalt Paving was done early, and War Story took the lead with Marconi breathing down his neck. The two were only a head apart with a quarter-mile to go when Bisono set down Adventist for a drive on the outside. The frontrunners could not hold on as Adventist blew by to win by three lengths.
The final time was 2:33.81 on a fast track.
War Story, Marconi, Lemonade Thursday, His Royal Majesty, and Asphalt Paving completed the order of finish.
Kentucky-bred Adventist was bred by Monticule out of the Deputy Minister mare Sharp Minister. He is a half brother to group 3 winner Dijeerr and multiple stakes winners Sharp Writer and Isn't He Clever. The last foal out of Sharp Minister is Clarent, a 2-year-old daughter of Majesticperfection.
From 43 starts, Adventist has a 5-3-7 record and $567,715 in earnings.
