Line of Duty, winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) at Churchill Downs, suffered a serious injury the morning of Oct. 26 and was euthanized upon veterinary advice, owner Godolphin reported Saturday.
The Galileo colt was pre-entered for the Nov. 2 TVG Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) at Santa Anita Park. In the 2018 Juvenile Turf, he rallied from eighth under William Buick to get up by half a length, holding off Uncle Benny and sailing past Somelikeithotbrown.
"Line of Duty was a brave horse who has traveled the world over," trainer Charlie Appleby said. "As well as his brilliant win at the Breeders' Cup, he has performed at the highest level throughout his career and will be sorely missed at Moulton Paddocks."
Line of Duty also won the Prix de Conde (G3) at 2 and returned this year at 3 to place in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard Jacques le Marois (G1), Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (G1), and Qatar Prix Dollar (G2).
Triermore Stud bred Line of Duty in Ireland out of the multiple group 1-placed Rock of Gibraltar mare Jacqueline Quest. Godolphin purchased the chestnut colt for 400,000 guineas (US$557,634) at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. From 10 starts and a 3-2-3 record, Line of Duty collected earnings of $829,589.
