On a rainy Oct. 26 morning at Churchill Downs, Breeders' Cup contenders Owendale, Arklow, and Mr. Money logged their final works on a sloppy main track prior to shipping to Santa Anita Park Oct. 27.
Rupp Racing's Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) contender Owendale worked five furlongs. The Brad Cox trainee, sporting his usual blinkers, worked on the outside of Pole Setter from the half-mile pole. He completed the breeze in :59 2/5 after splits of :11 4/5, :23 2/5, :35, and :46 2/5. The duo galloped out six furlongs in 1:13. The track was sealed in the overnight hours, and much of the moisture stayed off the track for the first 10-15 minutes of training.
"I thought it was an awesome work," Cox said. "I looked down at my watch when they were going and saw :35 and couldn't believe they were going that fast because how easy they were going. I thought getting their works in early today was going to be best because the rain looks like it will continue the rest of the day."
Donegal Racing, Joseph Bulger, and Peter Conway's Arklow, also trained by Cox, breezed five furlongs in 1:00 2/5 in advance of the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T). The grade 1 winner worked on the outside of Pioneer Spirit through splits of :12, :23 2/5, and :47. 3/5 and galloped out six furlongs in 1:13 4/5.
Allied Racing Stable's Mr. Money, bound for the Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), worked an easy half-mile in :49 4/5 with jockey Gabriel Saez aboard. The multiple grade 3 winner splashed through opening fractions of :12 3/5 and :24 3/5 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:02 4/5.
"We thought about a few options of different races in the Breeders' Cup, even the Classic, but we always thought the Dirt Mile would be the best race for him," trainer Bret Calhoun said. "We know he can get up to 1 1/8 miles but didn't want to have an unknown entering the race."
Mr. Money was fourth in the 2018 Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs. He's the only horse from the field who will compete in this year's World Championships.
Math Wizard Works at Gulfstream Park
Pennsylvania Derby (G1) winner Math Wizard breezed five furlongs under Edgard Zayas at Gulfstream Park on Saturday toward a start in the Classic. The Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee worked in company with Yodel E. A. Who and covered the distance in 1:02.32 over a muddy track.
"This was more of a stamina-building breeze. He had a good breeze last week," Joseph said. "He went seven-eighths in 1:28 and a mile in 1:41, so it was solid all the way around. He came back well. So far so good."
Math Wizard is scheduled to ship to Santa Anita Oct. 29.
Brown Trainees Dominate Belmont Park Tab
Chad Brown's stable dominated the Saturday Breeders' Cup works at Belmont Park, with Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence's Bricks and Mortar leading the way. Undefeated in five starts this year, Bricks and Mortar breezed a half-mile on firm inner turf in :49.11 as he prepares for a start in the Turf.
Peter Brant's Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) duo, defending winner Sistercharlie and Thais, breezed five furlongs in 1:00.85 on the inner turf. Dunbar Road and Wow Cat, both Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) contenders for Brant, worked five furlongs on a fast main track. Dunbar Road was clocked in 1:01.05 and Wow Cat, owned in partnership with Stud Vendaval, was timed in 1:01.01.
Also working for Brown was Uni, who worked four furlongs on the inner turf in :49.08 for the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T); Structor, who went four furlongs on the main track in :49.56 for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T); and Selflessly, who worked four furlongs in :50.70 on the main track for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T).
Jason Servis sent out Firenze Fire and Shekky Shebaz, who worked toward respective starts in the Dirt Mile and Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1T). Both breezed on the dirt training track—Firenze Fire five furlongs in 1:00 4/5 and Shekky Shebaz, who needs to draw in, three furlongs in :39.69.
Other Breeders' Cup workers at Belmont included Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (G1) contender Come Dancing (three furlongs on the dirt training in :37.55) and Juvenile Turf runners Decorated Invader and Our Country. Both worked a half-mile on the inner turf in :49 and :48.77, respectively.
Motion Runners Work at Fair Hill
Trainer Graham Motion put his Breeders' Cup contenders through their paces Saturday at his base at Fair Hill Training Center outside Elkton, Md.
Filly & Mare Turf runner Mrs. Sippy worked five furlongs on the all weather surface in 1:02 1/5, while Sharing worked six furlongs in 1:13 1/5 in preparation for the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Both are slated to leave Fair Hill Oct. 27.
