William Farish's Code of Honor turned in his final breeze Oct. 27 in preparation for the Nov. 2 Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), but the soggy weather in Long Island slowed things down more than trainer Shug McGaughey would have liked.
The dual grade 1-winning sophomore colt worked a half-mile at Belmont Park on a main track rated good. He was timed in :53.82.
"It went fine. It was a lot slower than I wanted. Track was a little funny and the weather was funny, so I probably overemphasized on (not) overdoing it," McGaughey said.
Belmont Park ran its first race of closing day in the afternoon before the track had to cancel the card because of high winds and heavy rain creating poor visibility.
Though he was disappointed with the work, McGaughey said Code of Honor seemed to come out of it fine and remains on schedule to ship to Santa Anita Park Oct. 28. The Hall of Famer said the chestnut's fitness will not be a problem.
"He's coming off two mile-and-a-quarter races, and he had a really good work on Monday (Oct. 21, five furlongs in 1:00 1/5), so it won't be a big concern," McGaughey said. "I'll probably give him an easy day, walk under tack or something or jog Tuesday after we get there, then I'll probably go on and gallop."
Code of Honor has won four of seven races this year, including a three-length score in the Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1). Last out, he finished a nose behind fellow Classic contender Vino Rosso in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) but was elevated to first when the stewards moved Vino Rosso to second for interference.
Ward's Trio Take to Keeneland's Turf
Wesley Ward sent out a trio of juveniles on a good turf course at Keeneland on Sunday morning. Stonestreet Stables' Cambria, Breeze Easy's Four Wheel Drive, and David Mowat's Kimari each worked a half-mile and were timed in :54 2/5, :48 3/5, and :52 flat, respectively.
All three were pre-entered in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) run Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.
Four Wheel Drive and Kimari earned a spot in the championship race through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series. The former, an American Pharoah colt, won the Oct. 6 Futurity Stakes (G3T) at Belmont, and Kimari, a Munnings filly, scored in the Indian Summer Stakes at Keeneland shortly after on the same day.
Cambria, a homebred daughter of Speightstown out of grade 2 winner Teen Pauline, last raced Sept. 7 at Kentucky Downs, her first start on turf, and took the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes.
