When JSM Equine's Peace Achieved showed up in Mark Casse's training center, the conditioner knew he received a good-looking horse. The question was how well he could run.
Now Casse believes the colt will be one of his stable's best chances in the 2019 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park when he runs in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Presented by Coolmore America (G1T) Nov. 1.
The Declaration of War colt has strung together three consecutive victories in five starts, topped by the Oct. 6 Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (G3T) at Keeneland. That effort, in which Peace Achieved pressured the pace and held off a late-running Vitalogy by a neck, followed a score in the Gainesway Farm Juvenile Stakes at Kentucky Downs.
"When you get any horse, no matter how good they look, you couldn't expect what he's done," Casse said. "(Owner) Joe Minor has been in the game for a long time, and it's nice for him to have a horse that's as good as this horse."
Casse expects the firmer turf in Southern California and Santa Anita's shorter turns to play to Peace Achieved's strengths in the full field.
"One thing about him—and it's one of the things that makes him a pretty good horse—is he's versatile and allows you to place him up close," Casse said. "He's got some speed."
The Bourbon, part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, awarded Peace Achieved an automatic berth into the one-mile Juvenile Turf. Another Declaration of War colt, Christophe Clement-trained Decorated Invader, won the only other North American Challenge Series race for the Juvenile Turf. Owned by West Point Thoroughbreds, William Freeman, William Sandbrook, and Cheryl Manning, Decorated Invader rallied to a clear victory in the Sept. 15 Summer Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine.
Trainer Chad Brown also has a graded stakes winner in the race in Jeff Drown and Don Rachel's Structor, who is 2-for-2 after winning the Sept. 28 Pilgrim Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park. Vitalogy, campaigned by Qatar Racing Limited, Marc Detampel, and Bottle Rocket Stable, is entered back after his Bourbon runner-up finish, his first start with trainer Brendan Walsh. Vitalogy was third in the Summer.
Aidan O'Brien trains Arizona, winner of the Coventry Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot and twice group 1-placed since, and Fort Myers, a listed stakes winner at Dundalk who is multiple group-placed. The Coolmore stablemates will make the trip from O'Brien's Ballydoyle.
O'Brien has won the Juvenile Turf four times since the inaugural running in 2007.
