Square Deal wins the I'm Smokin Stakes at Del Mar

In addition to Breeders' Cup World Championships 2-year-olds competing on "Future Stars Friday" Nov. 1 at Santa Anita Park, California-bred or -sired juveniles will also receive their moment in the spotlight.

The $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Stakes attracted a field of 13 colts and geldings, while the $200,000 Golden State Juvenile Fillies Stakes drew 12 entries. Both races will be run at seven furlongs on the main track.

Arnold Zetcher and Qatar Racing's stakes winner Square Deal is set to return to the dirt trying turf last out against open company. The Square Eddie  colt rallied to a 1 3/4-length score in the Aug. 30 I'm Smokin Stakes at Del Mar, but did not have the same kick back in the Oct. 6 Speakeasy Stakes on Santa Anita's turf. Trained by Simon Callaghan, Square Deal was almost a two-time stakes winner, but was disqualified to third in Del Mar's Aug. 2 Graduation Stakes for drifting in.

Square Deal, bred in California by Thomas Bachman, was a $230,000 purchase by Callaghan at the 2018 Barretts Select Yearling Sale, where he was consigned by Fairview. Out of the Jump Start  mare North Freeway, Square Deal is a half brother to multiple stakes winner and grade 1-placed Take the One O One.

John Sadler will send out West Point Thoroughbreds' Cali Dude, who won on debut Oct. 5 at Santa Anita. The Clubhouse Ride  gelding led every step of 6 1/2 furlongs in state-bred company, finishing 1 1/4 lengths in front of late-running Chipper, who is also back in the Golden State Juvenile for his second start.

The field also includes stakes-placed runners Tap Back, third in the I'm Smokin; Capote Stakes runner-up Dapper; and Pas de Panique, elevated to second in the Graduation.

In the Golden State Juvenile Fillies, KMN Racing's homebred Been Studying Her will shorten up after trying two turns around Santa Anita in the Sept. 27 Chandelier Stakes (G1). The daughter of Fast Anna  was fourth in that effort, and the Chandelier winner Bast is one of the favorites for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) later on the card.

Been Studying Her after winning the Generous Portion Stakes at Del Mar

Been Studying Her, making her second start with Dan Ward as trainer, won her first two outings when with Jerry Hollendorfer. She rallied to a 1 1/4-length victory in the Aug. 28 Generous Portion Stakes at Del Mar, defeating Friday's returning rivals Cholula Lips and Smiling Shirlee.

Gary Barber, Cecil Barber, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, and Wachtel Stable will bring a tough foe in Bulletproof One. The Idiot Proof filly began her career with trainer Ellen Jackson in Northern California, breaking her maiden by eight lengths and winning the Evertt Nevin Stakes by 9 1/4 lengths. She moved south to Peter Miller's barn and won the California Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Stakes by 6 1/4 lengths, was ninth in the Generous Portion, then rebounded to finish second beaten a head in the Speakeasy Stakes against males and in open company on Santa Anita's turf.

Warren's Showtime, trained by Craig Lewis for Benjamin and Sally Warren, enters off a rallying three-quarter-length victory in the Oct. 6 Surfer Girl Stakes, also run on Santa Anita's turf, in which she defeated Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) entrant Croughavouke. The homebred Clubhouse Ride filly returns to dirt for the first time since her debut four races back.
