Ashaar breaks his maiden at Belmont Park

Ten juveniles are expected for the $150,000 Nashua Stakes (G3), Aqueduct Racetrack's Nov.3 feature run at a mile, including a trio of colts coming off debut maiden special weight victories at Belmont Park.

Godolphin's homebred Spycraft, a son of Discreet Cat, was unveiled Sept. 21 in a six-furlong maiden. The Tom Albertrani trainee took over early under jockey Jose Lezcano and drew off by 3 1/2 lengths. Lezcano will be back aboard Sunday.

"He's definitely been on his game and has been sharper since his last race," Albertrani said. "He's been training forwardly. He doesn't necessarily need to be on the front end, we'll just let Jose figure it out."

Courtlandt Farms' homebred Americanus, trained by Mark Hennig, made his debut Sept. 28, also running six furlongs. The War Front  colt came from just off the pace before pulling clear by 1 1/4 lengths. Jockey Manny Franco retains the mount.

"He's been training well. It's a tough spot and the stretch out in distance is always interesting, but we think he's up for the task," Hennig said. "We're optimistic, but that happens when you're 1-for-1. He seems versatile in the mornings, so the pace will dictate where he's at early on. I don't think he'll be quite as close as he was last time."

Kiaran McLaughlin trains Shadwell Stable's Ashaar, who tracked from second early before capturing a seven-furlong maiden by 2 1/2 lengths Oct. 12. By Into Mischief  and out of the Coronado's Quest mares Well Spring, Ashaar is a three-quarters brother to Mendip, a group 2 winner in Dubai, and grade 2-placed Paddle Board. Shadwell purchased him for $650,000 from Ashview Farm's consignment to the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Jockey Joe Bravo has the returning call.

Other entries include Smoke Glacken Stakes winner Meru, Iroquois Stakes (G3) third Lebda, and Pilgrim Stakes (G3T) fourth Famished.
