Despite being stuck in traffic for much of the $4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) and needing room to run when turning for home, Horse of the Year candidate Bricks and Mortar flew down the Santa Anita Park stretch once a gap opened and ran down 51-1 shot United to win the Nov. 2 championship event.
Irad Ortiz Jr. was aboard the 5-year-old son of Giant's Causeway who completed 1 1/2 miles in 2:24.73 on firm going. United stayed on for second ahead of Anthony Van Dyck.
Trained by Chad Brown for Klaravich Stables and William Lawrence, Bricks and Mortar is undefeated is six starts this season, five of those at the grade 1 level.
