Grade 1-placed, two-time grade 3 winner Fear the Cowboy has been retired and will enter stud at Glasses Creek Ranch near Madill, Okla., according to bloodstock agent Chad Schumer, who brokered the deal.
Bred by the University of Kentucky's Animal Science Department, Fear the Cowboy sold for $1,500 to Alexandro Centofanti at Fasig-Tipton's Winter Mixed Sale in 2013 out of the Maine Chance Farm consignment. The son of Cowboy Cal is out of the Soto mare Whom Shall I Fear, a half sister to grade 2 winner O'Prado Again and stakes-placed winner First Romance.
Fear the Cowboy went on to win five black-type stakes, including the Skip Away Stakes (G3) and Harlan's Holiday Stakes (G3), both at Gulfstream Park. He won or placed in 12 stakes, with his 6-year-old campaign including a third in the Santa Anita Handicap Presented by San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino (G1). He also finished fourth in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1). Fear the Cowboy retires with a 9-7-5 record out of 31 starts and earnings of $1,774,369. Efren Loza Jr. trained the colt for all but his six initial starts.
Schumer said Fear The Cowboy provides the Oklahoma market with access to the successful Giant's Causeway branch of the Storm Cat sire line. Fear the Cowboy also hails from the same female family line as emerging sire Kantharos .
A stud fee for Fear The Cowboy will be announced at a later date.
