Our Super Nova proved much the best in the $158,175 Staten Island division of the New York Stallion Stakes Series Nov. 10 at Aqueduct Racetrack, leaving her rivals behind by 4 1/2 lengths to capture her first stakes victory.
The effort came off a runner-up effort in the Oct. 19 Empire Distaff Stakes at Belmont Park, where she rallied from eighth and missed Ratajkowski by a head. Sunday she produced another late-running effort, this time sailing clear of the seven other fillies and mares. Jockey Junior Alvarado was back aboard Our Super Nova, campaigned by Michael Foster and Lauren Linn in partnership with trainer Charlton Baker
"I thought she ran a big race. She looked comfortable early and Junior really gave her a great trip," Baker said. "Everything set up in her favor and she really performed today. I didn't really have to give Junior any instructions. He's ridden her four or five times previously and really gets along with her well. She certainly stepped up today."
Alvarado settled Our Super Nova in fifth while Carrera Cat opened with a quarter-mile in :24.05, and the winner was back in sixth as the half-mile went in :48.31. Fair Regis, who was pressing the pace, took over in the stretch, but Our Super Nova made a sweeping four-wide move and ran past the field. The final time for seven furlongs on a fast track was 1:25.91. Our Super Nova paid $7.90 for the win.
"I thought I was in a good position. Last time we broke slow and she was even further back, but she made up a lot of ground," Alvarado said. "I wasn't worried. I just wanted to make sure she was comfortable and in a nice rhythm so I would have horse left at the end. She was travelling very comfortably and when I asked her, she gave me a big kick at the end."
Fair Regis held for second a neck over My Roxy Girl in third. Espresso Shot, Kid s Frosty, Bluegrass Jamboree, Carrera Car, and Purrageous completed the order of finish.
Our Super Nova, a 4-year-old filly by Boys At Tosconova out of White Wedding Day (by Crimson Guard), was bred in New York by Tracy Egan. White Wedding Day foaled a full sister to Our Super Nova in April and was bred back to Redesdale .
Trained and owned by Linn as a 2- and 3-year-old, Our Super Nova improved her record to 6-4-2 in 19 starts and has collected earnings of $308,695.
