When Oklahoma horseman Rusty Roberts bought the Tiznow mare Red White and Blu in foal to the WinStar Farm stallion Constitution for $6,500 from Four Star Sales at this year's Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale, the timing couldn't have been better.
A son of Tapit who stood for $15,000 in 2019, Constitution is on fire with his first foals to race this year. Four graded stakes winners helped boost him to second on the first-crop sire list, and he'll stand for $40,000 in 2020.
The subsequent filly produced from Red White and Blu was purchased by Marette Farrell, agent for John Cummins, for $145,000 during the Nov. 11 session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
The filly was consigned Monday as Hip 2034 by Alliance Sales Agency, which is operated by Kathryn Kinder, the daughter of veteran Kentucky horse breeder Ralph Kinder. Most fortuitously for Kathryn Kinder, she had entered into a deal in which Roberts gave her the mare in exchange for the cost of taking care of the Constitution filly foaled March 22.
Ralph Kinder and other partners subsequently bought the 2019 filly privately from Roberts.
"Rusty is always looking for a bargain," Ralph Kinder said of Red White and Blu's price in January. "He made a deal with my daughter for her to raise the baby with no bills and he would give her the mare."
Red White and Blu is a daughter of the Siphon mare Lajitas, a half sister to Travers Stakes (G1) and Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner and sire Colonel John and to three stakes-placed runners, including Santa Anita Derby third-place finisher Mr. Hot Stuff.
Farrell, whose successes at picking precocious young horses includes this year's TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Storm the Court, said she and partners in a pinhooking venture are big fans of the WinStar stallion.
"We have loved Constitution, his babies, and his 2-year-olds, and this filly was especially athletic," Farrell said. "I liked the female family and liked where she was raised. Our team made a determination this morning that she was at the top of our list and we were going to try our hardest. I think she is a really special physical and she's a really, really good mover.
"I've made the mistake before of walking away from something like this and I think Constitution will keep going on."
