Mr. Monomoy breaks his maiden at Churchill Downs

Mark down another talented youngster produced from the 11-year-old Henny Hughes mare Drumette. The dam of Monomoy Girl—the champion 3-year-old filly of 2018—produced another winner Nov. 16 at Churchill Downs when her 2-year-old Palace Malice  colt, Mr. Monomoy, cruised to victory in a $93,809 maiden race.

Making his second start following a debut at Keeneland Oct. 19 when he rallied to finish fourth after a troubled start, Mr. Monomoy was always in control Saturday under Florent Geroux. Away alertly, he set the pace and easily dispatched his 10 rivals to pull clear by 5 1/2 lengths, racing 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:17.57. Heavily favored, he returned $3.80 to win.

"This colt, he doesn't remind me that much of her, but he's a racehorse," trainer Brad Cox said when asked to compare Mr. Monomoy to Monomoy Girl. "He's a runner, and he proved that today."

Cox hopes to eventually consider races for the colt that are part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Mr. Monomoy is owned by Sol Kumin's Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, and Doheny Racing Stable. Madaket and Dubb are also principals in Monomoy Girl, ownership that includes The Elkstone Group and Bethlehem Stables. Cox trains both horses.

Mr. Monomoy is Drumette's fifth foal and fourth winner. Originally sold at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale as a weanling when Gainesway consigned him and Fir Grove Farm spent $60,000 to acquire him, he was resold in the Arqana May 2-Year-Old Breeze-Up Sale for $202,230 to Mandore International Agency.

He was bred in Kentucky by FPF and Highfield Ranch, the breeders of Monomoy Girl. His dam also has a Shackleford  yearling that sold for $230,000 to Highbury Bloodstock when consigned by Gainesway to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearlings Sale, and a Mastery  weanling. Drumette sold last year for $1.85 million to Bridlewood Farm at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's mixed breeding stock sale in Lexington.
