Jonathan Nance scored his 1,000th win as a trainer Nov. 17 when Iron Bell strolled to a 2 1/2-length victory in the fourth race at Turf Paradise.
Campaigned by Barbara Eakin, Steve Smith, Janet Cosgrove, and Nance's wife Shelly, Iron Bell was seventh early under jockey Nathan Haar. The 3-year-old Oregon-bred gelding was six wide early and still four deep turning for home in the one-mile event but drew clear to break his maiden in 1:39.50 on a fast track. Nance, a 46-year-old native of Milwaukee, Wis., scored his first win as a trainer Aug. 16, 1992, with Sea Vette at Lone Oak in Salem, Ore. According to Equibase, Sea Vette marked a winning start to Nance's training career that fall. Through Sunday, he has 1,000-867-762 record from 5,221 starts and earnings of $5,862,409.
Nance's top runners include black-type scorers McKenzie Honey, winner of the ATBA Spring Sales Stakes at Turf Paradise, and Ex Mountain Cop, who took the Os West Oregon Futurity at Portland Meadows. The trainer also won the Portland Mile Handicap with Coronas at Delmar.
Nance was a leading trainer at Portland Meadows, which finished its final race meet in February. In 2010 Nance set a Portland Meadows track record, winning six races on the Jan. 13 card.
