With the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) still 22 weeks away, the pari-mutuel field of "All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings" closed as the even-money favorite in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Champagne Stakes (G1) winner Tiz the Law was the 11-1 second choice.
Tiz the Law, who finished an adventurous third in the Nov. 30 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs, edged Dennis' Moment (12-1), the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) favorite who finished eighth after going to his knees at the start; impressive Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1) winner Maxfield (13-1); and unbeaten Nashua Stakes (G3) winner Independence Hall (13-1) for individual favoritism honors.
Total handle for the Nov. 28 through Dec. 1 KDFW pool—the first of four scheduled wagering pools in advance of the 146th running of the May 2 Kentucky Derby—was a record $350,312 ($284,317 in the win pool and $65,995 in exactas), which was a lofty 35.6% increase from last year's $258,389 ($186,470 in the win pool and $71,919 in exactas).
Inaugurated in 1999, the Kentucky Derby Future Wager has been offered for a 22nd consecutive years, but this marks only the seventh time Churchill Downs has hosted a KDFW pool on closing weekend of its fall meet. The previous record for Pool 1 wagering during the fall meet was $273,174 in 2014.
