Randy Morse achieved his 1,000th career win as a trainer Dec. 15 at Remington Park with his own colt, Collection, who won the second race on the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes undercard.

Jockey Martin Garcia was aboard Collection for the six-furlong claiming event. The 3-year-old by Two Step Salsa was fifth early as Three Time Charmer led the way through fractions of :22.70 and :46.95. Collection rallied four wide to get his head in front in the stretch, then dueled with the pacesetter to maintain that margin at the finish line. The final time was 1:11.99 on a fast track.

Morse, 57, grew up on the racetrack and his father, W.R. "Charlie" Morse, was also a trainer. He worked various jobs on the backstretch—hot walker, groom, foreman, stable agent—and was galloping horses at age 15. Morse scored his first win as a trainer in 1981.

Morse has been responsible for several multiple graded stakes winners. In 2014 he saddled Moonshine Mullin  to win the Stephen Foster Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs, the horse's final start. Moonshine Mullin was a $40,000 claim seven months earlier. Morse also trained millionaire and Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G2) winner Jonesboro, and grade 3 winners Morluc, Testify, and Fan the Flame.

As of Dec. 15, Morse holds a training record of 1,000-956-925 from 6,869 starts. He is just shy of $25 million in earnings.
