English Bee wins the Parx Fall Derby at Parx Racing

Before the calendar turns, current 3-year-old turf runners in South Florida will get some final age-restricted stakes opportunities Dec. 28 at Gulfstream Park, which will offer the $75,000 Tropical Park Derby for 3-year-olds and the $75,000 Tropical Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.

The card will offer a total of six stakes races scheduled for the turf as it also features the $75,000 Via Borghese Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 3/16 miles on the turf and the $100,000 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes at two miles on the turf for 3-year-olds and older. Turf sprinters will contest the Janus and Abundantia stakes.

In the Tropical Park Oaks at 1 1/16 miles, Virginia Oaks winner Carnival Colors will go for her second stakes win of the season. Conditioned by Michael Stidham, Godolphin's Carnival Colors will try to bounce back from a ninth-place finish in the Oct. 18 Pin Oak Valley View Stakes at Keeneland. That effort followed a clear victory in the Virginia Oaks for the daughter of Distorted Humor .

Also, Team Valor International's Devant, a group 3 winner in France, is scheduled to make her United States stakes debut. The daughter of Showcasing enters off a third-place finish in a Nov. 9 allowance-level race on the Churchill Downs turf. The winner of that race, Our Bay B Ruth, is also entered Saturday.

In the 1 1/16-mile Tropical Park Derby, Black Ship Racing, Brian Chenvert, and Eddie Kenneally's Jais's Solitude will try to secure an elusive first stakes win. The son of Afleet Alex  finished second by a nose to English Bee—also entered Saturday—in the Virginia Derby (G3T) in August and then was disqualified to sixth for interference in the stretch after finishing first in the Bald Eagle Derby Sept. 21 at Laurel Park.

Calumet Farm's English Bee will try for a third straight stakes win as the son of English Channel  followed his Virginia Derby score with a victory in the Parx Fall Derby.

In the Via Borghese, Robert Slack's Lucky Long will try for her fourth win this season on the Gulfstream turf. The 5-year-old Lookin At Lucky  mare enters off a victory in a Claiming Crown race, the Tiara, Dec. 7 at Gulfstream. Also looking for his fourth win on the Gulfstream turf this season will be Salute the Colonel, when he starts in the Jerkens distance test. Earlier this year the 5-year-old son of Colonel John won three straight stakes on the Gulfstream grass and he enters off a runner-up finish in a local starter-optional claiming race Dec. 1.

While Mr. Amore Stable's Vision Perfect has finished off the board in three straight starts, the son of Pollard's Vision is back to  to defend his 2018 victory in the Janus, for 3-year-olds and older; while Triton Stable, Brian Chenvert, and Eddie Kenneally's Girls Know Best returns to defend last year's win in the Abundantia, for fillies and mares.
