Omaha Beach arrives Dec. 31 at Gulfstream Park

Readying for the final start of his career in the Jan. 25 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes Sponsored by Runhappy (G1) at Gulfstream Park, Omaha Beach  began the new year on a different coast the morning of Jan. 1.

Based for much of his career in California, the Richard Mandella-trained colt was flown to Florida and arrived late Dec. 31 at Gulfstream, where he took up temporary residence in the barn of trainer Mark Hennig, a friend of Mandella. The War Front  colt traveled just days after winning the Dec. 28 Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park to conclude his 2019 campaign.

"I have no date set for his breezes there," Mandella told Santa Anita's publicity team. "It'll be a while, but he's doing good."

A probable finalist for the Eclipse Award for 3-year-old male, a prize expected to go to Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) winner Maximum Security this month, Omaha Beach is set for just one start as a newly turned 4-year-old in the Pegasus World Cup before beginning stud duty at Spendthrift Farm in Central Kentucky. He has a 5-4-1 record from 10 starts and earnings of $1,651,800 for Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms.

The Malibu was the third grade 1 victory of 2019 for Omaha Beach. He also won the Arkansas Derby (G1) and Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G1).
