Idaho Legislature to Honor Jockey Stevens

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, a native of Caldwell, Idaho, will be honored by the Idaho legislature next Monday, Feb. 9. He will be accompanied to the ceremony by another Hall of Fame rider, Mike Smith, according to a release.

Born and raised in Caldwell, Stevens rode his first winner at Les Bois Park in Boise at age 16 aboard a horse trained by his father.
Stevens currently ranks 30th in number of U.S. wins with 4,999.
Stevens, who was inducted in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 1997, was voted an Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey in 1998. He has won nine Triple Crown races, with three victories each in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, all grade I.
Stevens retired in 2005 to become a television analyst for NBC Sports and TVG and was one of the stars of the HBO series "Luck."
Stevens returned to the saddle in 2013 and immediately picked up where he left off, winning that year's Preakness with Oxbow at age 50.
