Salutos Amigos will try to extend his stakes race win streak to three when the two-time graded winner faces an expected five rivals in the $150,000 Toboggan Stakes (gr. III) Feb. 7 at Aqueduct Racetrack.
A 5-year-old gelding by Salute the Sarge, Salutos Amigos enters Saturday's six-furlong race for older horses off clear victories in the Gravesend Stakes on the Aqueduct inner track and the Fall Highweight Handicap (gr. III) on the Aqueduct main track. Those wins closed out his 2014 season for trainer David Jacobson, who owns Salutos Amigos with Southern Equine Stable.
Before those victories Salutos Amigos finished seventh, just three lengths behind winner Work All Week, in the Xpressbet Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.
"He certainly has a good record at Aqueduct but more importantly I think he's a solid racehorse that runs good on any track," Jacobson said. "He ran especially well in California [Breeders' Cup Sprint] to only lose less than three lengths. He's doing very good coming into this race."
Awaiting Salute the Sarge will be Vincent Scuderi's Dads Caps, who in April scored a 10-1 upset in the Carter Handicap (gr. I) on the Aqueduct main track. The son of Discreet Cat failed to win again in six starts after that victory, all stakes, but will try to earn his fifth career score in his 2015 debut.
Starting from the outside in the field will be William Fuccillo's Mewannarose, who finished second to Salutos Amigos in both the Fall Highweight and the Gravesend.
