Bodecream wins the Texas Turf Mile Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park

Red Lane Thoroughbreds' Bodecream made the best of a quick pace up front in the inaugural $200,000 Texas Turf Mile Stakes, a race that featured stakes winner Jack and Noah and Chimney Rock, and rallied to a clear victory at 9-1 Jan. 26 at Sam Houston Race Park.

"Pace makes the race, and it really makes the race when you have a horse that wants to be positioned back and wants to make a late kick," winning trainer Danny Pish said. "Things worked out that way today, and it made us all look smart. But (owner) Chris Hicks deserves all the credit because it all starts with him."

The Texas Turf Mile, for 3-year-olds, was the Bodemeister  gelding's stakes debut. Jockey Deshawn Parker was aboard Bodecream and settled his mount eighth through the first half-mile. Atlantic Beach Stakes winner Jack and Noah stretched out to a five-length lead as he set fractions of :22.51 and :46.23. Chimney Rock, the runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T), sat in second ahead of Southgate and Toma Todo.

Bodecream moved up two spots by the time Jack and Noah ran six furlongs in 1:11.49, but the pacesetter's five-length lead began to diminish as he entered the stretch and was eventually swallowed up. Parker guided Bodecream three wide and found running room on the outside. The dark bay or brown gelding ran past his rivals and left them fighting for the placings as he cruised to a 3 1/2-length win.

The final time was 1:37.01 on a turf course rated good.

"Danny told me if he runs like last time, he'll be tough. Just get him covered up and get that late burst," Parker said. "He said maybe not as late as last time, but when I asked him and got him clear, he just took off. He like shrugged down and just took off. He really did good."

Toma Todo was second, Pixelate rallied from seventh for third, and Chimney Rock was fourth. The favorite Jack and Noah finished fifth.

Red Lane purchased Bodecream for $50,000 from the St George Sales consignment at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The gelding has earned $137,307 from a 2-1-0 record in six starts.

"I know Danny's been working with Bodecream for quite a while now, so a lot of that success rides on Deshawn and Danny getting the job done," Hicks said.

Bodecream was bred in Kentucky by Judy Hicks, Kathryn Nikkel, and Sanford Robertson. He is out of the Dixie Union mare Call Mariah and is a half brother to group 3-placed Califante.

Real News Breaks Through in Turf Sprint

Town and Country Racing's Real News entered Sunday's $100,000 Frontier Utilities Turf Sprint Stakes having placed in three stakes outings, including the Penn Mile Stakes (G2T). But the five-furlong dash for older horses proved to be a breakthrough for the 4-year-old by The Factor . Guided by Colby Hernandez, Real News dug in for a long drive and battled back to win by half a length.

Real News, the 4-5 favorite, was fourth early as Nicky Numbers and Powell dueled for the lead through fractions of :22.19 and :45.51. Hernandez tipped his ride out three wide, one path out from nearby rival Fast Boat, and Real News stuck his head in front in the stretch. Fast Boat was a stubborn foe, but Real News toughed it out to hit the wire in :57.30.
