Breeders’ Cup Sprint
Corey Nakatani, who does not have a confirmed mount in the BC Sprint but could be in the mix to ride Justin Phillip, leads all jockeys with four Breeders’ Cup Sprint wins (Thor’s Echo, Reraise, Elmhurst and Lit de Justice). Mike Smith is the only other active rider with multiple BC Sprint victories (Amazombie and Cherokee Run).
Bob Baffert, who will saddle Secret Circle in the BC Sprint, leads all trainers with three wins in that race (Midnight Lute twice, Thirty Slews). Wayne Lukas, who has Fast Bullet this year, is the only other active trainer with multiple BC Sprint wins (Orientate, Gulch).
Trinniberg seeks to become the second repeat BC Sprint winner, joining Midnight Lute (2007, 2008). Nine BC Sprint winners have failed in repeat attempts: Very Subtle, Dancing Spree, Sheikh Albadou, Thirty Slews, Cardmania, Kona Gold, Cajun Beat, Big Drama and Amazombie.
Either Forty Tales or Goldencents could become the eighth 3-year-old to win the BC Sprint, following Very Subtle (1987), Sheikh Albadou (1991), Reraise (1998), Squirtle Squirt (2001), Cajun Beat (2003), Silver Train (2005) and Trinniberg (2012).
Reneesgotzip seeks to become the fourth female to win the BC Sprint, joining 3-year-old filly Very Subtle (1987), 4-year-old filly Safely Kept (1990) and 5-year-old mare Desert Stormer (1995).
Points Offthebench and Private Zone are among those seeking to become the 10th gelding to win the BC Sprint, following Thirty Slews (1992), Cardmania (1993), Elmhurst (1997), Reraise (1998), Kona Gold (2000), Cajun Beat (2003), Thor’s Echo (2006), Dancing in Silks (2009) and Amazombie (2011).
Justin Phillip and The Lumber Guy each seek to win the BC Sprint for the first time in their second attempt, a feat accomplished previously by Smile (1986), Safely Kept (1990), Cardmania (1993) and Lit de Justice (1996). Kona Gold won the BC Sprint for the first time on his third try (2000).
Betting favorites are 0-for-6 in the BC Sprint when the race has been run at Santa Anita.

Breeders’ Cup Mile
Wise Dan seeks to become the fifth horse to win multiple editions of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, following Miesque (1987-88), Lure (1992-93), Da Hoss (1996 and 1998) and three-time winner Goldikova (2008-10).
Trainers with multiple BC Mile wins: 3, Freddie Head (Goldikova three times); 2, Pascal Bary (Six Perfections and Domedriver); 2, Francois Boutin (Miesque twice); 2, Julio Canani (Val Royal and Silic); 2, Michael Dickinson (Da Hoss twice); 2, Claude “Shug” McGaughey (Lure twice).
