In winning his third race in as many starts with an effortless scamper in the $100,000 LA Bred Premier Night Prince Stakes at Delta Downs Feb. 8, it seems 3-year-old No Parole has outgrown his state-bred pond.
Deeper waters await the son of Violence , but if Saturday night's performance is an indication, No Parole may prove a shark rather than a minnow when he resurfaces, which trainer Tom Amoss suggested in a post-race interview is likely to come in a major stakes race for 3-year-olds. Though No Parole beat a questionable field in the Prince Stakes, the manner in which he won is indicative of a talented horse.
The Amoss trainee settled kindly after springing to the lead, setting an easy pace with fractions of :49.39 and 1:14.38 before leaving five outclassed foes behind. He won by 6 1/2 lengths, not asked for his best late, stopping the clock in 1:39.93 for a mile on a tiring dirt surface. He paid $2.10.
Freedomfi rallied from last to grab second, a head in front of Guitar Tribute.
The Prince Stakes was No Parole's first two-turn test after winning a maiden race by 14 1/4 lengths Dec. 15 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots followed by a 13 1/4-length triumph there in an allowance Jan. 11. Both races came at six furlongs.
"He's so kind, so smart. He does everything you ask him to do," said jockey James Graham. "He doesn't have to be told to do a whole lot."
A $75,000 yearling purchase by owner Maggi Moss at the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale from Select Sales, agent for Coteau Grove Farms, No Parole is out of the stakes-winning Bluegrass Cat mare Plus One. The dam has two winners from three foals to race.
Asked what might be next for No Parole, Amoss did not mention a specific target.
"I just fly the plane; Maggi calls the shots. We'll get together on that," the trainer said. "I think we have to try one of the Triple Crown preps. He earned it tonight and showed what a good horse he is."
