New England Owner/Trainer Delgado Dies at 74

Lucia (Lucy) Rodriguez Delgado, who owned and trained horses in New England at Rockingham Park and Suffolk Downs for five decades, died Feb. 13 from brain cancer. She was 74.

As a trainer from 1976-2012 and competing mostly in claiming races, Delgado saddled 1,958 starters with a record of 257-266-257 with earnings of $1,472,563, according to data from Equibase. Horses who ran under her maiden name as the owner made 11 starts with four wins, two seconds, and two thirds and earned $45,335 in purses. Horses she owned in her married name started 37 times with six wins, four seconds, seven thirds, and $66,062 in earnings.  

Delgado was also a former case manager for the Massachusetts Department of Welfare for 35 years. 

She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughters Cerie Yourawski and Diana Frankel; grandchildren Robert, Caroline, Julian, and Austin; her brother, Jose Rodriguez; and several nieces and nephews. 

Her funeral mass was celebrated at Saint Adelaide Parish in Peabody, Mass., Feb. 19. 

The New England Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association announced on its Facebook page the passing of three other former trainers. Francis Sampson died Dec. 12, and Pedro Perez died Jan. 20. There were no public services held for either horseman. On Feb. 18, Ed Lippman, who was active from 1996-2010 and trained 368 starters, died, but no details were yet available.
