Tracy Pinchin's Jackson ran down frontrunning Admiral Lynch to upset the $100,000 World of Trouble Sprint Stakes (G3) at 13-1 Feb. 22 at Gulfstream Park. The six-furlong dash was the first stakes win against open company for the 4-year-old Florida-bred colt.
Jose Pinchin trains the son of Kantharos for his wife, who is also the breeder. Luis Saez was in the irons.
"Hey, he's a homebred, so we must be happy," Jose Pinchin said. "The mare is worth something. It's a grade 3."
Jackson broke inward from post 5 and bumped with Admiral Lynch, who then pushed into Sweetontheladies. Lasting Legacy, the 4-5 favorite, was bumped by Sweetontheladies and ended up last of eight early. His Jason Servis stablemate, Admiral Lynch, grabbed the lead over Jackson and set fractions of :22.52 and :45.15 through a half-mile while maintaining at least a length advantage.
Admiral Lynch was still up front as the field turned for home, but Jackson loomed up on the outside of the pacesetter as Epic Dreamer made a bid from third on the outside. The two in front put away Epic Dreamer, then Jackson turned away Admiral Lynch late to win by three-quarters of a length.
The final time was 1:09.55 on a fast track.
"He warmed up so good," Saez said. "He broke so well, he was right there. When we came to the three-eighths pole, I know we can fire. We came to the stretch, and he did it."
"I was really pleased. He broke good; he tracked the horse. Luis went around and gave him a great ride. He should have won last time," the winning trainer said, referencing a wide and rallying third in the Jan. 18 Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes.
Admiral Lynch was second, another 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Epic Dreamer in third. Lasting Legacy rallied to finish fourth, a half-length behind Epic Dreamer.
Jackson is out of the Put It Back mare Deposit Only, who is also the dam of stakes-placed Catfight Cowgirl. Jackson has a full 3-year-old sister named Defining Moment. Deposit Only has since been bred to Uncaptured.
Jackson has a 6-4-2 record from 16 starts, winning the Juvenile Sprint Stakes at 2 and the Ocala Breeders' Sales Sophomore Stakes, FTBOA Silver Charm Florida Sire Stakes, and FTBOA Marion County Florida Sire Stakes at 3. Saturday's win increased his earnings to $446,715.
