Mr. Monomoy wins the Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course

Mr. Monomoy, the winner of the Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2), is off the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) trail with a minor ankle injury, Liz Crow confirmed March 1.

Crow, the racing manager for owners Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, and Doheny Racing Stable through BSW Bloodstock, said Mr. Monomoy will require 60 days off and will stay at WinStar Farm to rest and heal. The 3-year-old Palace Malice  colt was on his way to the Central Kentucky farm Saturday afternoon. He had been stabled with trainer Brad Cox's string at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots throughout the winter and is expected to return to Cox's stable in the spring.

"He just needs a couple of months off," Crow said. "He had some roughening in his P1 (first phalanx) after galloping two days ago."

Mr. Monomoy, a half brother to champion Monomoy Girl, earned 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with his Feb. 15 Risen Star victory, which is typically enough to guarantee a spot in the Derby starting gate. He had an additional two points from a third-place finish in the Jan. 18 Lecomte Stakes (G3) and is currently second on the leaderboard behind Saturday's Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) winner Ete Indien.

"We're glad we caught it early before he really needed anything major done," Crow said. "It was really pretty minor all in all. It just needs some time to heal. Unfortunate timing, but it is what it is."

Mr. Monomoy was a $202,230 purchase by Mandore International Agency at the 2019 Arqana May Breeze-Up Sale. From two wins, a second, and a third in five starts, he has earned $327,162.
