King Guillermo wins the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs

King Guillermo pulled a 49-1 shocker in upsetting Sole Volante and a large cast of 3-year-olds March 7 in the $400,000 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) at Tampa Bay Downs.

The Tampa Bay Derby, a prep race for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), provided qualifying points toward that race on a 50-20-10-5 basis to its top five finishers.

The winner was not an original nominee to the Triple Crown, though that could change in the weeks ahead with a later nomination. He raced 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:42.63 and paid $100.40 to win.

Samy Camacho rode the winner, a 3-year-old son of Uncle Mo , for owner Victoria's Ranch and trainer Juan Carlos Avila.

Favored Sole Volante rallied from far back to grab second and was followed by third-place Texas Swing and fourth-place Relentless Dancer. Chance it, the second choice, was unplaced.
