Tetaze wins the Latinoamericano at San Isidro

Tetaze, a 3-year-old son of Equal Stripes (by Candy Stripes), was a convincing winner of the March 14 Longines Gran Premio Latinoamericano (G1) at San Isidro Racecourse in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The $500,000 Latinoamericano is the richest race in South America.

Along with other racetracks across the globe, the Latinoamericano program was run without spectators. Several days of rain left the course less than firm. Nao Da Mais set a demanding early pace in the 2,000-meter (1 1/4-mile) event with an opening 400 meters in :24.05, 800 meters in :47.89, and 1,200 meters in 1:12.17.

As the large field made its way off the turn, Nao Da Mais went wide and then wider, eventually being some 10 lengths off the fence. That opened the path for several runners, but Tetaze was moving best of all, opening a sizable advantage after a mile in 1:38.75. The colt tired as he neared the wire but was still clear at the line ahead of Mirinaque in 2:03.71, making for a local exacta.

Bred by Bioart S.A., the winner is trained by Juan Saldivia and owned by Marovi S.A., Daniel Mautone, and Eugeni Sangregorio.

Fifth behind Nao Da Mais and Mirinaque in the Dec. 14 Carlos Pellegrini-Internacional (G1) at San Isidro at 12 furlongs, Tetaze won the Eduardo Casey (G2) in October and placed in the 12 1/2-furlong Nacional (G1) behind Mirinaque.

The winner is out of Delirada, a daughter of Orpen (by Lure).
