A speedy daughter of 2019 leading first-crop sire American Pharoah zipped a quarter-mile in :20 2/5 to lead the March 13 second under tack show workouts in preparation for the Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.
The auction at OBS headquarters in Ocala, Fla., is scheduled for March 17-18, beginning at 10:30 a.m. daily.
Cataloged by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, agent, as Hip 237, the filly was bred in Kentucky by Zayat Stables, which also bred and raced American Pharoah to Triple Crown success. The filly was produced from the winning Songandaprayer mare Megalicious, a half sister to multiple stakes winner Abbondanza.
A half sister to multiple stakes-placed My Sweet Stella and from the same family as the dam of Iowa Breeders' Oaks winner Snapy Gal, the filly was purchased for $165,000 in the name Windfield Bloodstock from the VanMeter-Gentry Sales consignment at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale. The bay filly was bought initially by Renee Dailey for $70,000 from Lane's End at the 2018 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.
The OBS Safetrack artificial track appeared to be playing fast early.
"The track was good and fast when my horse worked, but we took a fast horse there and we expected him to work fast," consignor Al Pike said of Hip 347, an Anchor Down —Red Brunette colt that was one of seven juveniles that worked an eighth-mile in :09 4/5, the fastest time of the day at the distance. "(The track) normally slows down when things get hot."
The temperature in Ocala reached 85 degrees by midafternoon Friday.
The other eighth-mile workers in :09 4/5 were Hip 230 (Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, agent), a Kantharos —Marie Antoinette colt; Hip 289 (Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent), Chiran, a Run Away and Hide—Officer Allie colt; Hip 369 (L. G., agent), an Orb —Rosy Humor colt; Hip 397 (Harris Training Center, agent), a Liam's Map —She Be Keene filly; Hip 417 (Sequel Bloodstock, agent), a Ghostzapper —Smoke Signals colt; and Hip 433 (Golden Rock Thoroughbreds, agent), an Overanalyze—Spoken filly.
The under tack show was interrupted for more than an hour while veterinarians treated a colt that collapsed. Juan Centeno, whose All Dreams Equine consigned the Lookin At Lucky colt as Hip 294, said the veterinarians believed the colt likely had a heat stroke and tied up a little. The consignor said the colt recovered and was fine after returning to the barn and was later withdrawn from the sale.
