Edgar Prado guides Cory Gal to victory March 25 at Gulfstream Park

* Editor's note: Equibase said it received official notice late March 25 of the disqualification of the Prado-ridden Kitten's Point from the ninth race at Keeneland on April 14, 2015—a race that had been under appeal for a post-race positive test—bringing Prado's win tally back to 7,056. As a result, he now enters the March 26 program at Gulfstream Park one behind Angel Cordero.

Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado tied Angel Cordero as the eighth leading rider in North American history with 7,057 victories when he piloted Cory Gal to a frontrunning victory in the third race March 25 at Gulfstream Park for trainer Gustavo Delgado.

The 52-year-old Peruvian native, who won the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) aboard Barbaro, is second among active riders behind Ohio and Kentucky veteran Perry Ouzts (7,065). Among his many wins, he twice scored in the Belmont Stakes (G1), capturing it in 2002 with Sarava and in 2004 with Birdstone , and has recorded five victories in Breeders' Cup races, most recently in the 2015 TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) on Runhappy .

The veteran rider passed the 7,000 win threshold in 2018, after which set his sights on Cordero's tally.

"It’s an honor to reach that goal and tie Angel Cordero," Prado said. "Hopefully, I’ll go by him one of these days, but it’s an honor."

Prado has enjoyed a productive winter during the ongoing championship meet at Gulfstream, where he was leading rider in 2002 and 2005, according to the track.

He became widely known in 2006 as the regular rider of Barbaro, who he guided to wins in the Tropical Park Derby (G3T), Holy Bull Stakes (G3), Florida Derby (G1), and Kentucky Derby before the colt fractured his right hind leg in the early stages in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Barbaro was euthanized in 2007 from debilitating complications his injury caused in other limbs.

Between 1990 and 1999, Prado won 300 or more races in a single season six times including a high of 535 in 1997.

Prado has an opportunity to surpass Cordero with four mounts March 26 at Gulfstream, one of which is an also eligible. He has seven rides at Gulfstream on March 27.
