Trainer Christophe Clement notched his 2000th career victory with Gufo in the last race at Gulfstream Park March 27.
Gufo scored by a half-length under Joel Rosario in an optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on turf to give his trainer the milestone victory.
Clement, a son of a successful French trainer Miguel Clement, saddled his first winner, Spectaculaire, at Belmont Park on Oct. 20, 1991, scoring with his very first starter. The 55-year-old trainer apprenticed under Freddie Head and Luca Cumani in Europe before going to work for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey in the U.S.
Tonalist gave Clement his first victory in a Triple Crown event in the 2014 Belmont Stakes (G1) before going on to win back-to-back runnings of the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) in 2014-15. Clement, a finalist for Thoroughbred racing's Hall of Fame this year, saddled Gio Ponti for multiple grade 1 victories, include a win in the 2010 Arlington Million (G1T).
