Hope for the first win, optimism following a stakes score, and dreaming of what's next; perhaps wishes for a classic victory.
Also, there's hope for a new stallion, a breeder's faith after selecting the perfect sire for a new mare, and the anticipation of the foal's arrival. That hope typically takes shape on quiet mornings when strong mares deliver eager foals, ready for every challenge.
Those new arrivals have no idea of the racing challenges that may await, but they bring complete focus on the initial challenges: arrival, standing, walking, then eventually heading outside to a paddock; mom at their side every step along with the helpful people who oversee early days. Before a horse ever makes its first start, there are plenty of initial hurdles to clear in their development.
It's these milestones photographer Mathea Kelley is bringing readers at Bloodhorse.com, BloodHorse Daily, and BloodHorse magazine this spring.
Latest in the series is a slideshow of Mi Vida producing a Medaglia d'Oro filly Feb. 29 at the Don Alberto Farm near Lexington. Bred by Don Alberto Corporation, the filly is a full sister to grade 3-placed winner Gold Standard.
