Live racing in Ohio will remain suspended through May 15, according to an April 10 directive released by Bill Crawford, the director of the Ohio Racing Commission. Racing was first suspended in the state March 20 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and was later extended to at least April 30.

In addition, the Ohio Thoroughbred Race Fund stakes have been postponed, including the April 11 Howard B. Noonan Stakes at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley and the May 9 Best of Ohio Stakes at Belterra Park. The Ohio Sires Stakes races for 3-year-old pacers and trotters, originally scheduled to take place at Miami Valley Raceway on May 1 and May 3, also will be rescheduled.

The directive reiterated that while racing is canceled, any tracks that have backsides or dormitories that are open "shall remain open and operational until further notice," and if the track is "available for training, it shall remain open for reasonable equine exercise until further notice."

The directive also repeated the commission's intent to prevent abuse or abandonment of horses, allow for consolidated feed programs, prevent homelessness of seasonal workers, and provide adequate exercise and veterinary care for horses.

"The commission considers themselves a partner with the horsemen and permit holders in reaching a solution to the issues and stand ready to assist the parties in compromise," the directive stated. "You should take all reasonable measures possible to continue social distancing practices. The commission will continue to update you as pertinent information becomes available."

Horsemen are encouraged to check the Ohio State Racing Commission's website regularly for information and updates.
