Breeders' Cup Joins Fight Against COVID-19

Breeders' Cup may run the World Championships of horse racing, but the organization with a global reach is headquartered right here in Lexington. And as the COVID-19 crisis rages around the world, members of the Kentucky-based operation are joining to do their part in the fight against the novel coronavirus.
While an initial donation of $25,000 to the Race Track Chaplaincy of America will be allocated to various local backstretch communities across the country to help those most in need, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear also got a welcome response from Breeders' Cup in his call for donations of personal protective equipment to the state.
The organization donated 4,500 gloves, 2,000 hair covers, 1,200 Tyvek suits, 500 masks, and 500 shoe covers to Kentucky to be given to medical professionals who are treating COVID-19 patients.
"It is the selfless, we're all in it together attitude we're seeing from everybody," Beshear said Wednesday while showing photos of the Breeders' Cup donation and other inspirational Kentuckians during his daily address.
Dora Delgado, executive vice president of racing and nominations for Breeders' Cup, and Erin McLaughlin, senior manager of racing services, were on-site April 15 at the Breeders' Cup warehouse in Lexington to sort items and make the donation.
"We will continue to look for opportunities to support our industry and the heroes on the front lines of the fight to treat patients and stop the spread of the coronavirus," said Breeders' Cup president and CEO Drew Fleming.
The Breeders' Cup World Championships are slated to be held Nov. 6-7 at Keeneland.
