The Jockey Club of Canada will present the 45th Annual Sovereign Awards, honoring Canada's Thoroughbred racing champions from 2019, in a virtual ceremony May 19 beginning at 8 p.m. ET, the organization announced.
Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, the 2019 Sovereign Awards ceremony was scheduled April 16. It was postponed and changed to a virtual format for safety reasons.
Winners of the 24 Sovereign Awards categories will be announced during the ceremony, which can be streamed live at Woodbine.com and HPItv Canada. A digital program will be available for download at https://jockeyclubcanada.com prior to the event.
The finalists for Sovereign Awards include popular sprinter Pink Lloyd, who is up for championships in two categories, and Starship Jubilee, a former $16,000 claimer who became a millionaire and winner of the 2019 E. P. Taylor Stakes (G1T).
Besides equines, the Sovereign Awards also honor humans in racing. Mark Casse, recently elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, is one of three finalists in the trainer category. He has won the award a record 11 times.
Among jockeys, Rafael Hernandez, Patrick Husbands, and Eurico da Silva are the finalists. Da Silva is a six-time Sovereign Award winner who retired last year.
The owner finalists are Chiefswood Stables, Sam-Son Farm, and Stronach Stables. Chiefswood and Sam-Son are also breeder finalists with Tall Oaks Farm.
