Delaware Park announced May 16 its intention to run its meet from June 17-Oct. 17, pending state and regulatory approval.
The 65-day meet, reduced by 20 days because of COVID-19, is subject to Delaware Gov. John Carney allowing racing to commence, with or without fans, and the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission approving the revised schedule.
Live racing will initially be conducted three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Thursdays will be added July 16 and continue through Oct. 1. The Delaware Handicap (G2) is still scheduled for July 11, and the Delaware Oaks (G3) is set for July 4.
Racing will be conducted with enhanced safety protocols compiled from recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Delaware state health officials, the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. The protocols include:
• Temperature checks and health screening questionnaires at the facility and stable area;
• Strict social distancing requirements;
• Required use of personal protective equipment (facial coverings and gloves);
• Frequent disinfecting of all areas with Environmental Protection Agency-registered and CDC-approved cleaning solutions effective against the COVID-19 virus.
The Delaware Park stable area is currently open with 240 horses in training.
