American classic winner and expatriate stallion Creator sired his first winner May 14 when his son Lumiere won in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance race at Mombetsu Racecourse on Hokkaido.
Lumiere is a second-generation homebred for owner/breeder Daito Bokujo, who breeds under the name Utopia Bokujo. The colt's second dam is Pure Brown, a grade 3-placed winner by Indian Charlie who was bought for US$43,795 by an entity named Antelope Flats at the 2002 Woodbine Yearling Sale out of Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency's consignment. She won two of seven starts at 2 for Bokujo, including the Begonia Sho Stakes, a prominent fall race for 2-year-olds at Tokyo Racecourse, and earned US$183,116 as a juvenile. Pure Brown's total earnings were US$387,551.
From Pure Brown, Bokujo bred Lumiere's dam, Pure Diamond, who didn't win at 2 but won at 3 and 4. She was retired with nearly US$202,000 in earnings. Pure Diamond has passed along plenty of early speed as shown by Lumiere's half sister Pure Imperial (Kurofune), who won twice and placed six times out of 11 starts at 2.
Creator, a son of Tapit , didn't win at 2, but he was second three times. He broke his maiden in his second start at 3 and two races later won the Arkansas Derby (G1). He was unplaced in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) but found redemption by winning the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1). WinStar Farm raced Creator throughout his career and took on celebrity chef Bobby Flay as a partner prior to the Belmont. The partners sold Creator to the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders' Association, and he entered stud in Japan in 2017 at Shizunai Stallion Station on Hokkaido.
